Green Hydrogen Innovation Centre · Data Tools
Estimates the carbon intensity of hydrogen production (kg CO2e per kg H2) for a chosen feedstock and production pathway.
About the tool
The tool follows a five-step process: identify the feedstock, select the production pathway, input key data, model the emissions, and report the carbon intensity of the hydrogen produced in kg CO2e per kg H2.
It maps the energy used at each step of the selected pathway and applies the carbon intensity of each energy source. It estimates process emissions; full lifecycle (Scope 3) emissions are country- and industry-specific and need a dedicated study.

Step by step
6 steps from first input to result. Screenshots of every step are in the user guide.
Step 1
Pick the country of the project to open the form.
Step 2
Choose the production pathway and its feedstock, and enter how much hydrogen is produced a year.
Step 3
Adjust the feedstock’s energy content and emission factors, the carbon capture rate or the electricity use - or leave them empty to use the model defaults.
Step 4
Set the mix of electricity sources and their emission factors, or keep the default mix.
Step 5
Click “View results” for the carbon intensity, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and how the other pathways compare.
Step 6
Download a one-page PDF of the result, or go back to any section to try other values.
Before you start
Select the country, then describe the production in 3 short sections - the pathway and feedstock, the process and the electricity supply. Choose the pathway, feedstock and yearly output; for the technical figures, leave a field empty to use the model default shown in it. Select View results to see the kilograms of CO2e per kilogram of hydrogen, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, and download them as a one-page PDF.
